What is Adventure Racing?
Adventure Racing started in 1989 when sailing photographer Gerald Fusil conceptualized and planned a land race in New Zealand. Fusil’s first
Adventure Race, Raid Gauloises, incorporated the adventurous and team aspects of sailboat racing into a land-based race. Adventure Racing is a
multi-sport race that focuses on teamwork and navigation. Teams comprise anywhere from 2 to 5 members, with some events offering solo
opportunities. In most races, team members carry all their food and water for the entire race. In Adventure Racing, there is no downtime. Teams
decide when and if they will rest during a race. Teams race against the clock in sprint races that last less than 24 hours and expedition races
spanning multiple days. The longest race in North America is Primal Quest, which has a ten-day cut-off and covers approximately 450 miles. The
common discipline that separates Adventure Racing from other multi-sport races is the orienteering and navigation necessary for teams to be
competitive. Successful Adventure Racers are both fast and able to navigate with a map and compass only.
What do we do?
We work with Adventure Racing directors to help support their goals to provide fun races for new racers and challenge experienced racers. We
also put on orienteering training, small urban races, and leadership training classes to support the active lifestyles we all enjoy as individuals and
teams.
