Wow! What a rush!  Determined to not hold back teammates and to force myself to improve my skills, I competed
in the solo division.  I didn’t win, but I successfully ran, mountain biked, kayaked and navigated my way around the
Island Lake Recreation Area using my compass and a bit of help from other racers.  A team sport to the very end,
it is most common for racers to help out other teams as needed throughout the event.  I was very pleased with my
efforts.  I located (and sometimes stumbled upon!) all of the mandatory CPs as well as a few additional ones; I
made it back before the six-hour cutoff time; I did not tip over my kayak, and I did not lose my map or compass!

Volunteers throughout the course were plentiful, and racers were welcomed at the finish by enthusiastic smiles
and praise, plenty of good food and beverage and a hilarious slide show.  There was even a mini adventure race
for children that followed the adult version.

At the awards ceremony, the top team, Who Gave the Polack the Compass?, ran away with the coveted prize of 2
pairs of diamond stud earrings.  Second and Third place teams, Funderstorm and Trail Seekers, also won
valuable loot, and raffle prizes were plentiful.

My first adventure race experience will by no means be my last; I’m hooked!"

Race Report: Thanks to Tracey Cohen for providing her race review... "Adventure racing has attracted many
athletes who are or were former distance runners and/or triathletes.  Much of the appeal includes the more
challenging mental component of navigation not typically found in traditional races as well as the excitement
and variety of cross training thus necessary for athletes suffering from recurring injuries.

Diamonds & Dirt AR 2008
For myself, while my interest continued to peak, I was a bit hesitant
as while I enjoy mountain biking and canoeing, I am not experienced
at either sport, and I have been known to be a terrible navigator.
Enter GLTEAMS, a fairly new establishment dedicated to helping
people to get involved in adventure racing.  They provide support and
value making the sport fun, unique and accessible through clinics,
events and more.

On April 20, 2008, GLTEAMS put on their inaugural Diamonds and
Dirt Women’s Adventure Race. And I competed in my first.
